FBA Transparency is Amazon’s item-level authentication program designed to prevent counterfeit products from reaching customers. Enrolled products receive unique 2D barcodes (Transparency codes) that Amazon scans at its fulfillment centers before shipping. If a unit lacks a valid code or carries a duplicate, Amazon blocks it from being sent to the buyer. The program operates independently of Amazon Brand Registry, though brand registration is a prerequisite for enrollment.

How the Program Works

Once a brand owner enrolls a product (identified by its ASIN) in Transparency, Amazon generates unique alphanumeric codes tied to that specific item. Each unit produced must carry its own unique Transparency code, typically printed on the packaging as a 2D barcode. These codes are single-use. Amazon’s fulfillment centers scan every unit during the inbound receiving process and again before dispatch. Any unit that fails validation is quarantined and flagged.

Brand owners generate codes through the Transparency portal. Amazon provides them in batches, and the brand is responsible for applying them during manufacturing or prep. Codes can be printed directly on product packaging at the factory, applied via sticker labels during prep, or integrated into existing packaging workflows. Each code costs approximately $0.01 to $0.05 depending on volume, though Amazon has adjusted pricing over time.

Operational Requirements for Sellers

The biggest operational shift comes at the prep stage. Every unit shipped to Amazon must carry a valid Transparency code before it arrives at the fulfillment center. For sellers manufacturing overseas, this means coordinating with suppliers to integrate code application into the production line. For sellers who handle prep domestically, each unit needs a Transparency label applied during the prep workflow alongside the standard FNSKU label.

Accuracy is non-negotiable. If a unit arrives at an FBA warehouse without a Transparency code, Amazon will reject it during receiving. The inventory gets marked as unfulfillable, and the seller either pays for removal or disposal. For large shipments of 2,000 or 3,000 units, even a small percentage of missed labels can result in hundreds of rejected items and significant restock delays.

Sellers using a prep center must ensure their provider has a documented process for Transparency code application. This includes verifying that codes are applied to the correct ASIN (not cross-applied between products), that labels are scannable, and that no codes are wasted or duplicated. Prep centers handling Transparency-enrolled products typically build the labeling step into their standard workflow, adding a per-unit charge to cover the additional handling.

Benefits Beyond Counterfeit Prevention

Transparency provides granular unit-level traceability. Brand owners can see where each code was scanned, when, and at which fulfillment center. This data helps identify supply chain leaks, such as unauthorized distribution or diversion. If counterfeit complaints persist despite Transparency enrollment, the code-level data gives the brand legal evidence for enforcement actions.

Customers can also verify authenticity by scanning the Transparency code through the Amazon Shopping app. This consumer-facing feature adds a layer of buyer confidence, particularly for categories plagued by counterfeits like supplements, beauty products, and electronics accessories.

Considerations Before Enrolling

Transparency adds a per-unit cost and an operational step to every shipment. For high-volume, low-margin products, the additional $0.01 to $0.05 per unit may be negligible. For slower-moving SKUs, the cost is still minimal, but the prep complexity increases. Sellers should also confirm that their manufacturer can integrate code application at the factory level. Applying thousands of Transparency labels manually at a domestic prep facility is feasible but slower than having codes printed on packaging during production.

Brands experiencing active counterfeit issues on their listings will see the most immediate return from enrollment. For brands without a counterfeiting problem, the program serves as a preventive measure that also unlocks unit-level supply chain visibility.
