Container drayage from port terminal to MeisterPrep warehouse

Why Drayage Goes Wrong (and How We Fix It)

Most importers don't think about drayage until something breaks. A container sits at the terminal past its Last Free Day, and suddenly you're paying $150-$300 per day in demurrage fees. The trucking company can't find an available chassis, so your pickup gets pushed another 48 hours. Or the container arrives at a warehouse that wasn't expecting it, and now you're paying detention on the chassis while the driver waits for a dock door.

MeisterPrep eliminates these problems because we control both sides of the move. Our warehouses in Long Beach (CA), Des Plaines (IL), Houston (TX), and Charleston (SC) sit within short drayage distance of the country's busiest ports and rail ramps. We coordinate directly with steamship lines, terminal operators, and chassis pools so your container moves on time, every time. When your container hits the port, our ops team is already tracking the vessel, monitoring holds, and scheduling the pickup for the earliest available slot.

We handle drayage for Amazon FBA sellers, Walmart and retail suppliers, TikTok Shop merchants, Shopify D2C brands, B2B wholesale distributors, and direct importers. Bringing in 2 containers a month or 20, the process stays the same: we pick up your container, deliver it to our warehouse, unload and receive your freight, and return the empty container and chassis before any fees kick in.

How Drayage Works with MeisterPrep

From the moment your vessel arrives at port, our team manages every step of the container move.

1

Container Release and Pickup Scheduling

Once your container is discharged from the vessel, we monitor terminal availability and customs holds in real time. As soon as the container status flips to “available,” our dispatch team books a pickup appointment. We track your Last Free Day closely. Most ports give you 4-5 free days before demurrage charges start, and we aim to have your container out within 48 hours of availability. For Long Beach and LA terminals, that means booking morning gates to avoid the afternoon congestion that can add 3-4 hours of wait time per truck.

2

Port and Rail Ramp Pickup

Our drayage carriers pick up your container from the marine terminal or inland rail ramp. Typical drayage costs run $350-$800 depending on distance, container size (20′ vs 40′), weight, and terminal congestion surcharges. We secure chassis from the pool in advance so there’s no scrambling on pickup day. For overweight containers (over 44,000 lbs), we arrange overweight permits and route the truck accordingly. Our Long Beach operation handles the Port of Long Beach and Port of LA. Houston covers the Port of Houston and Barbours Cut. Charleston handles the Wando Welch and Hugh Leatherman terminals.

3

Delivery to Warehouse and Unloading

The container goes straight to our warehouse, where a dock door is pre-assigned. No driver wait time, no detention charges from sitting in a yard. Our receiving crew unloads the container the same day it arrives, barring late-afternoon deliveries that roll to the next morning. We count every carton, check for damage, photograph discrepancies, and update your inventory in our WMS within hours. If the freight is headed to Amazon FBA, we can start labeling and prepping the same day. Retail-bound goods get sorted by PO number. D2C inventory goes into pick-ready storage.

4

Container Return and Chassis Management

After unloading, the empty container and chassis need to go back to the designated return location before the free time expires. Chassis rental fees run $25-$75 per day, and they stack up fast if the container sits at your facility too long. We return empties the same day or next business day. Our dispatch team confirms the return depot (which changes frequently, especially in Southern California) and schedules the trip so the driver isn’t waiting 2 hours at a backed-up return yard.

Warehouses Near Major Ports

Our Long Beach warehouse is less than 15 miles from the Port of Long Beach and Port of LA, the busiest container port complex in the Western Hemisphere. Houston sits near the Port of Houston, the largest Gulf Coast port. Charleston provides access to the Port of Charleston, a major East Coast gateway. Des Plaines serves the Chicago rail ramps where containers arrive from West Coast ports via intermodal service. This proximity cuts drayage costs and transit time compared to warehouses 50-100 miles inland.

Last Free Day Management

Every container has a Last Free Day, usually 4-5 days after discharge from the vessel. Miss it, and demurrage charges hit $150-$300 per day at most terminals, with rates escalating after day 3 of overstay. Our ops team tracks every container's LFD and prioritizes pickups so you never pay demurrage. We pull reports daily from terminal websites and carrier portals to stay ahead of any changes.

Demurrage and Detention Avoidance

Demurrage (port storage fees) and detention (late chassis/container return fees) are the two biggest hidden costs in importing. A single container that overstays by one week can rack up $1,500-$2,000 in combined charges. Because we unload containers the same day they arrive at our warehouse and return empties within 24 hours, our clients rarely see these charges on their invoices. When port congestion causes delays outside our control, we file dispute claims on your behalf.

Drayage Plus Receiving in One Move

With most 3PLs, drayage and warehouse receiving are separate vendors, separate schedules, and separate headaches. At MeisterPrep, the container goes directly from port to our dock. No transloading at a third-party yard. No waiting for a receiving appointment at a warehouse that doesn't know your freight is coming. One provider, one point of contact, one invoice. Your goods go from the ocean to pick-ready inventory in as little as 24 hours from port pickup.
